Absurd comedy in two acts
Translated by János Elbert
Running time: 2 hours 10 minutes with one intermission
Premiere: 28 October, 2011
Kandid Kastorovich Tarelkin is just a little cog-wheel in the Russian machinery of bureaucracy. His apartment is
full of bed-bugs, his boss is sucking his blood, his creditors are hanging on him like leeches. Therefore, Kandid Kastorovich decides to disappear from the world and organizes his own funeral. But his plan turns out badly and from then on only the horror of horrors is waiting for him -- he gets stuck in the big cog-wheels of the state police. The comedy of Sukhovo-Kobilyn written is 1869 is an impertinent social satire and a nightmarish vision of the power of the easily emboldened civil servant. The missing link between Russian realism and surrealism.

The Örkény Theatre has started this season with a dazzling performance, and Imean the word dazzling literally – not just because suddenly no other word comes tomind. The large, raucous play, brimming with human personality, could bemore thanmere comedy.
Népszabadság – László Zappe
...even the tiniest role is filled with blood and life...
Élet és Irodalom – Tamás Koltai
The trump-cards in the Örkény Theatre’s undertaking are the actors in episodic roles. Playing several characters, they are always placed ormanage to tumble onto the best positions on the chess-board.
Kultúra.hu – Tamás Tarján
At the theatre where farces are played the best, a dangerous horror comedy was born.
Színház.net – Noémi Herczog
Let’s start with an acclamation: “Bravoooo...!” The actors are outbidding each other and themselves fromrole to role, and the theatrical romp only gets funnier.
